Earth Day Jubilee

3rd Friday April 2013
Wood Mosaic Frames

The Earth Day Jubilee third Friday event (4/19), in the adult category, we planed for a wood mosaic photo frame activity that didn’t go quite as good as I wanted. For one thing, we knew that since we have other earth day events going on in other parts of the town, the earth day event at the museum might not attract as many as participants that we expect in other events. Besides, we set up the wood mosaic station in the classroom, which is kind of isolated from the other parts of the Museum and there was no sign to direct the crowd. Nonetheless, we had great participants who really liked the activity and they did an awesome job making awesome hand-made frames.

Kid Happy Hour

3rd Friday April 2013

The Earth Day Jubilee 3rd Friday event (4/19) was the first 3rd Friday in Mah that we added a “Kid Happy Hour” to the schedule. Kids got to the museum earlier than usual at 3:30 and we stretched out the kids’ activities until 8:00 pm, through the actual event. All of our kid happy hour activities were happening in the Auditorium. We had a Cardboard Forest, Animal mask craft, coat hanger wings, Mud Pie and other very fun activities.
We had a large number of very small kids and some of the activities were too complicate for them, but the cardboard forest was a win for every one. All of the kids regardless of their age were so excited to play in it!!!

Here is a photo of leaf critters made by one of our young visitors. I specially love the bearded forest monster.

I prepped for the Egg Carton Bugs activity for the kid happy hour. Here are some of the photos of the preparation and the event.

Since the kid happy hour experiment has only just begun, we have a lot to learn about our participants and their interests. For one thing, we noticed that we have a lot of younger children with the age 3-5 in the room that some of the activities like the Egg Carton Bugs, might not be suitable for. So either the parents or us had to jump in and help the younger ones with the hot glue or fixing the pipe cleaner legs on the bugs. For other thing, I noticed that most likely, the kids like the crafts that they can wear better rather than the other ones. So, we’ll see how the kid happy hour will turn out and I’ll keep on the updates on that. For now, here is one of our young participants, working on her pink spider.
